My Work

DARKROOM is an empowering project Run and directed by Syrian artist Serbest Salih, who is a refugee himself and finds love in teaching art of photography to children of deprived areas. The project equips children with inexpensive, pinhole andsimple analogue cameras, teaches them the basics of composition and visual arts and how to develop, print and achieve results out of their own art. The children are encouraged to take photos of their own surroundings, and capture the innocence and the beauty inside their own lives. Serbest also teaches them how to develop their photos, print them and makes exhibitions of their art; a full cycle of artistic experience.

My portfolio showcases various commercial and personal projects created throughout my career. Subscribe to my site to get updated when I add new stuff.

About Me

My Name is Serbest Salih I’m a self-taught photographer from Kobani . I was born in 1993 in a still communist country, so I had to spend my first 20 years of life in a small rural city with my parents. I realise now how lucky I was to be barefoot every summer, to build my own dolls from corn and make fantastic cities from snow. I’ve lived with my parents until university when I moved to Mardin turkey  and I started studying business management and worked for a while In non-governmental organizations in the Department of Humanitarian Aid  . This is where my love for people transformed into me having a camera by my side and taking portraits of every emotion that inspired me.
My passion for photography grew stronger when I started working in analog photography workshop with syrian and Mardin children ( Sirkhane Darkroom ) its a darkroom on the Turkish/ Syrian Border children learning to shoot and develop their own film
I especially love analog photography.
My photography is emotion, story telling, mood, intimacy
